Is There a Reason for Glyconutritionals and Other Food Supplements?
As a species, we rely heavily on food. Nevertheless, in today's world, fresh produce is rarely available. Because they are produced in nutrient-deficient soil, harvested before they are naturally ripe, gassed, irradiated, and artificially ripened, and kept for days before we consume them, the so-called "fresh" fruits and vegetables we buy today have little nutritional value. Thus, the fundamental components of functional meals that are crucial to our health and wellbeing are missing from our diets.
What occurs if we lack these functional foods?

The body's miraculous ability to heal itself relies on the raw ingredients provided by functional foods, which in turn give the body the fuel it needs to function at peak levels. When people don't get enough of these functional foods, they run into four common issues: We're going to starve to death because so much of the food we eat lacks essential nutrients. These carbohydrates (phytochemicals) are bioactive molecules found in nature that help prevent disease by boosting the body's inherent ability to heal itself.
Where did these phytochemicals come from?

Only eight of the approximately 200 simple sugars (glyconutritionals) found naturally in plants are known to play a significant role in cellular communication. They are exclusive to produce that has fully ripened on the plant, and they can be active for up to two days after harvesting. Only two of these sugars, glucose and galactose, are actually used by humans today. There is an enzymatic process that can turn these two into the six missing sugars, but it is time-consuming (up to 20 steps), iffy, and error-prone. Because of this, we should add these sugars to our diets to make up for their absence.
What makes these glyconutrients so crucial?

Glycoproteins are the building blocks of every cell surface receptor, along with their binding and signaling components (proteins and sugar). They serve as a form of communication between cells in the body. Glycoproteins can be thought of as the "words" or "letters" of a language. Glycoproteins cannot perform their role in the cell membrane if they are not properly synthesized due to incorrect placement or an absence of sugar (carbohydrate). Accurate cell production for our organs is impossible without efficient cell membrane communication.

"Almost invariably" (John Hodgson, 1990, Bio/Technology), cell surface carbohydrates will be involved in any interaction between two or more live cells.
